CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)-
Nearly two-thousand CMS athletes underwent some special screenings that could save their lives.
They were checked for serious heart problems, for free.
Saturday's event was all about prevention, and it had some perks.
The students were greeted by Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and linebacker Thomas Davis. Davis said he hoped by seeing the pro players involved with the event will help get student athletes excited about going through testing, and going back and telling some of their friends.
About 400 volunteers helped coordinate the Heart of a Champion event from the school system and Carolinas Medical Center.
